Also a poet of formidable gifts and considerable output, Brecht first attracted attention in the Berlin of the 1920s as the author of provocative plays that challenged the tenets of traditional theater. Having learned that a new form of theatre could not be established by merely burlesquing the conventions of bourgeois theatre, Brecht’s experiments before his exile from Germany in 1933 involved the exploration of the Lehrstück (learning play) – a new type of proletarian theatre in which workers or students would be both spectators and actors. Epic theatre, German episches Theater, form of didactic drama presenting a series of loosely connected scenes that avoid illusion and often interrupt the story line to address the audience directly with analysis, argument, or documentation. Epic theatre is now most often associated with the dramatic theory and practice evolved by the playwright-director Bertolt Brecht in Germany from the 1920s onward. Bertolt Brecht in 1954 Epic theatre (German: episches Theater) is a theatrical movement arising in the early to mid-20th century from the theories and practice of a number of theatre practitioners who responded to the political climate of the time through the creation of a new political theatre. The playwright Bertolt Brecht was born in 1898 in the German town of Augsburg.

I made this for a drama assignment for school, in which I exp Brecht is a charmer, if nothing else, and his plays have so much life to them that manages to succeed even when his vaunted "alienation" effect doesn't work as planned. And in his theoretical work, he's often charming too, even if his writings on theater from a technical perspective are a bit useless to me as a … Brecht's equally sparse sets which prompted the critic Mordecai Gorelik to describe Brecht's concept of staging in terms of a "Japanese kind of precision."8 The intention, of course, in Brecht's case, is to tempt the audience as little as possible into identifying the theater with life.9 Bertolt Brecht, egl. When most people use the term it is in their description of a piece of theatre. Often, they are implying that piece of theatre is non-traditional, and in fact, acknowledges that it is theatre. It has become a sort of blanket statement for all theatre that is different than traditional.

Is Brecht present in a theater that is reborn from its own ashes? I recently participated as a member and advisor of three doctoral thesis committees that had the learning play as their topic: Teixeira, 18 Boy, 19 Concilio. 20 Research on Brecht's learning plays raises a question:

Urpremiären på den tredje versionen skedde i Köln den 16 april 1955 under titeln Galileo Galilei. Brecht började repetera den på Berliner Ensemble i december 1955.
